Case of the Mondays

It seems like life is a little crazy right now. I guess at a middle school, it's the nature of the job. I got a new student from an African refugee camp today. She doesn't speak any English. Are there programs to help such students? I am not ESL endorsed (it seems no one needs assistance with Tagalog, dang it!). None of our ESL specialists speaks Swahili and as far as I know, besides one basic ESL class this girl gets thrown into the public school system without much other assistance. Just so you can get an idea of the demographics of this area, we currently have 2 students in ESL. This girl will be the third. It just got me thinking a lot about what I would do and worry about if I were to adopt such a child; how it would be amazing but very difficult at the same time and how I would worry about educating her and helping her to adjust from living in a war zone to Utah suburbia.

Other happenings:

  • HB295 passed unanimously in the house, though I still feel that the district will have to raise taxes some and make other cuts. It's not a magic fix-all bill, but definitely helps a lot.
  • School Board meeting tomorrow at 7pm. We have some parents from our school speaking about supporting a tax increase.
  • I'm learning from various situations that have arisen, and this is not my singular or even a very original epiphany, that despite all of our technology: cell phones, texting, iphones, email, facebook, blogging, twitter, google calendars, open source docs, etc. there seems to be a degradation of communication and planning. Oh the drama that's not really drama, but then is because we make it that way.
  • I ordered a pair of shoes and had them sent to our old address yet again! Ugh! I'm an idiot! At least it wasn't from the same place. I've since deleted all old Provo addresses from my account.
  • 12 days until the first day of spring!
